The Birth Of The Conventions
The basic conventions of Metal.
Metal is traditionally characterized by distorted guitars with fast riffs and solos, (but however this is not the case all the time as some Metal bands produce an acoustic albums). They also have wild hair styles which make them stand out from other bands as they have their own individual hair styles. The music video’s are traditionally Performance based which are focusing on their instruments and a narrative, the music also involves sinister themes Such as Black Sabbaths ‘Heaven and Hell’. This sells the music itself and the instruments used. One band that challenges the conventions is Metallica. In one of their videos the hair is neat and their make-up is simple/natural. They also challenge the convention as their videos are sometimes just narrative based.
History of metal.
Metal developed in the late 1960’s early 70’s. In the late 1980’s the genre was reabsorbed by new genre’s and by the early 90’s the majority of Metal bands had evolved into other rock genre’s like hard rock, grunge, gothic rock , thrash metal and more.
Here is some of the most important historical events that made Heavy Metal
1968- ‘Born to be Wild’ was released and is said to be the first Heavy metal song.
1975- Heavy Metal began to influence British music.
1980- ‘Iron Maiden’ was released by a British Heavy Metal band .
1983- May 29 a festival for Heavy Metal was named the biggest Heavy Metal event which helped promote the genre.
From then on Heavy Metal was promoted across different country’s and began to influence UK bands such as ‘Metallica’

New matal bands compared to old meltal bands.
The differences between old Metal bands albums covers compared to new Metal bands alnums covers.
Iron maiden first album cover
Five Finger Death Punch recent album cover

There are many similarities between iron maidens first album cover released in the early 1980's and Five Finger Death Punch's 'Wrong side of heaven and the righteous side of hell' volume 2 released in 2013. For instance both album covers have sinister themes and satanic images and has a connection to horror films. they both have their bands name located at the top of the cover in big bold writing so it stands out. The audiences needs towards the metal album covers hasnt really changed over the years as it is clearly all about the music and not the aesthetics of the band or the album covers.

Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell
Steel Panther Death To All But Metal
There are no similarities between these two album covers from Black Sabbath and Steel Panther. For example Black Sabbath's album cover of Heaven and Hell still supports a slightly sinister theme this the angels smoaking and gambling which are sins and angles should not be doing it. Compared to Steel Panthers Death To All But Metal album cover, they are seen to be breaking all the conventions as hardly any other metal band has a portrait of themselves on the cover. However Steel Panther is a glam metal band who doesn't conform to the same conventions as death metal and normal metal bands.
